Our Story

Step Stampede is a Cairns region based line dancing community founded by Denver — created to bring people together through movement, connection and joy.

Denver first discovered line dancing growing up in Mareeba, Far North Queensland, where moving with their family sparked a love for dancing. Years later, after living interstate, competing in sport, completing a teaching degree and finally returning deeply to dance in 2020, they realised how powerful dancing can be for health, joy, general wellbeing, and community connection.

In 2023, Denver founded MaGiCS — Moovin’ Groovin’ Chap Slicks in Adelaide, building a warm, queer-friendly line dancing collective that quickly grew into a thriving weekly community that has expanded to different locations around the country and now overseas. With the support of his partner Seth, the group flourished — attracting dancers from all backgrounds, queer folks and proud allies alike — all united by their love of dancing, movement, and connection. It showed that when you create genuinely welcoming spaces, people feel safe to show up, learn, and belong.

Now, back home in Far North Queensland, Denver and Seth have brought that same spirit to the Cairns region with Step Stampede.

Step Stampede is proudly inclusive and community-focused. It’s a place where beginners can relax, experienced dancers can challenge themselves, and everyone can move at their own pace. No pressure. Just music, dancing, friendship and fun in a space that celebrates diversity and welcomes everybody.

Step Stampede isn’t just about learning steps — it’s about building a community that moves together, supports each other, and celebrates every person on the floor.

Step Together: Every step, every beat, everybody!

Our Goals

The Cairns region has a strong and passionate line dancing community, and we honour the foundations that have been built over many years. Step Stampede exists to help that scene grow even wider — creating space for people of all ages, backgrounds, identities, and music tastes to dance together so it’s inclusive, supportive, accessible, and sustainable for everyone.

Our Structure

We currently operate as a sole trader, with the intention to transition into a not-for-profit. Our focus isn’t profit — it’s covering costs, keeping classes accessible, fairly paying facilitators for their time, and reinvesting back into the community by creating events that are welcoming for everyone.
